Na 2012 zijn de cijfers alleen maar dramatischer geworden. Zo ook in Nederland. De helft van de Nederlandse bevolking beweegt onvoldoende en is te zwaar; 14% is obees. Bij mannen tussen 50 en 65 jaar gaat het om 65%. Maar ook kinderen (4 t/m 17 jaar) bewegen onvoldoende en ook bij hen komt helaas steeds meer overgewicht voor; inmiddels gaat het om 15%. Overgewicht kan meestal worden verklaard uit de disbalans tussen energie-inname en -gebruik: teveel (ongezonde) voeding en te weinig bewegen.

De afgelopen twee jaar tuimelen de studies over elkaar heen, met steeds dezelfde indringende boodschap: jong en oud moeten méér gaan bewegen en sporten om het afweersysteem te versterken en de risico’s op ziekten, gerelateerd aan bewegingsarmoede, te verminderen (Da Silveira et al., 2021; Shahrbanian et al., 2020; Nieman, 2021). Bewegen en sporten kunnen beide pandemieën bestrijden: COVID-19 én lichamelijke inactiviteit (Castro et al., 2020). Regelmatig intensief bewegen gedurende het hele leven zou dé manier zijn om het immuunsysteem zo optimaal mogelijk te laten functioneren, ook in reactie op een vaccinatie (Laddu et al., 2020; Furtado et al., 2021). Dat laatste aspect - bewegen zou de hoeveelheid en activiteit van antistoffen na COVID-19 vaccinatie kunnen verhogen - wordt momenteel door de groep van Scherder onderzocht.

De overheid neemt de bewegingsarmoede onvoldoende serieus. De overheid is namelijk niet bereid om door middel van wet- en regelgeving de gezondheid van iedereen te beschermen. De overheid wil niet ‘betuttelen’ en laat het bewegen aan het individu over. Maar het individu wordt beperkt door het schoolsysteem, het zittend werken, de zorginstelling. Onbegrijpelijk in het licht van de grootste crisis na de WO II en de noodzaak om onze gezondheid tegen toekomstige pandemieën beter te beschermen door het versterken van ons immuunsysteem. Met andere woorden, vanuit een interdepartementale en intersectorale samenwerking moeten maatregelen genomen zoals hierboven beschreven en die zorgen voor échte maatschappelijke verandering op het gebied van leefstijl.
Het gezamenlijke doel moet om te beginnen veel ambitieuzer worden gesteld. In het preventieakkoord is een doelstelling opgenomen over bewegen: in 2040 moet minstens 75% van de bevolking voldoende bewegen. Dat is twee generaties verder! De Nederlandse Sportraad is hier heel duidelijk over: dit moet in 2030 zijn bereikt, en met een aangepaste beweegnorm.
